Real Fair Trade is a commitment to help deprived regions and communities work their way out of poverty. We have a view of ‘Trade not Aid’ as sustained growth through work is far better than simply giving handouts. It ensures valuable culture, pride and values are kept intact coupled with ensuring people can make a better life for themselves and their families.

Our family business began at the start of 2006 on a visit to the island of Bali, Indonesia. There had just been some terrorist bombings in which with the 2002 bombings resulted in a total of 223 deaths making Bali an ’unsafe’ tourist destination. Many no-travel directives were put out and tourism dropped by a monumental amount leaving the island devastated economically and socially.

This however did not deter the cultured islanders and their kindness, happiness and positive outlook in uncertain times inspired us to do something to help. We on impulse ordered carvings and jewelry from deprived villages and families to try and make a difference. We pay our artisans directly with no middle-man involvement ensuring they receive substantially more for their products.

We currently source our products from Bali and South Africa and are looking to expand into new parts of Africa, as well as South America over the coming years. There are many ways of helping less fortunate people including foundations, micro-loans and missionary work. We feel it is also possible to run a proper business and grow our less developed carvers and artisans in tandem and by doing this growth can be self funded allowing as many people as possible to better themselves and their situation.
