Balinese Artwork

The island of Bali is located in South East Asia between the Bali Sea and Indian Ocean. The population of the island is around 3.3 million people and the island is absolutely reliant on tourism for its economic prosperity.

The islands population rely on their considerable skills in areas of agriculture, wood carving, stonework and hospitality. Tourism on the island is slowly recovering after the horrific terrorist bombings of 2002 and 2005 which prompted us to start this business. The carving process begins with the felling of the albizia tree and once the wood is processed into smaller manageable sizes the hand carving begins.

The craftsmen and women usually carve the wood while it is still wet as it is easier to work and shape. Once the particular item is finished it is kiln dried to extract all the moisture and this ensures the carving will not crack at a future date. Once this process is complete the item is finished by either staining and polishing, painting or burning the particlar finish onto it.
